Many teenagers, now hitting early puberty, are being diagnosed with cysts on their ovaries.
Doctors say it may have something to do with the way children these days are choosing to live their lives.
The cysts, Dr. Mangala Devi, the lead gynaecologist at Smile Baby IVF, Bengaluru, explains, are small bubbles erupting on the ovaries.
“It can occur in any woman anytime during her fertility years. However, the point of concern is about the very young being affected.”
The cysts are known to cause obesity, irregular menstruration, abnormal hair growth and acne, and in certain cases, hormonal riots. If left untreated, the affected girls could grow-up to face difficulties in conceiving. Sometimes, high blood pressure, cholestrol spikes, sleep disorders, diabetes and cancer too, could be the outcomes.
Lifestyle
The disorder, known by its medical name, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), is related to the lifestyle, although some researchers also apportion genetical and enivornmental causes to it.
Children are increasingly acquiring it due to their altered living. “They hardly go out to play. They consume junk food and sleep at odd hours. It has especially been the case since Covid closed down the world,” Dr. Mangala says.
The good part is PCOS could go away just by adopting a more active lifestyle. In fact, a good doctor would often suggest it over other forms of treatment. But of course, where PCOS remains compulsive, medical treatment may still have to be initiated.
PCOS in older women
The fact, however, is PCOS knows no age. It can happen anytime during a woman’s fertility years. Its worst effects are seen in women trying to make their family. In such women, the gynaecologist may sometimes have to try and clear the cysts medically, to give them a chance to conceive and to give birth.
“It is a growing problem these days. We also recognise that the women concerned may have carried PCOS undetected from the early teens,” Dr. Mangala says.
The best course open is early detection and treatment – a possibility that emerges only when girls and their family begin to see value in regular gynecological check-ups.
That, however, is the aside to the larger story. The story is really about healthy living.
